Retailers and online stores get paid to license their order history.
Yes. An e-commerce or retail business can license its order history, with the returns and support tickets tied to each order, to AI companies. Shopper names and card details come out first, and the store platform's terms must allow it. Every original record stays with the owner, and nothing is licensed until they approve the scope and sign.
Which store records do AI companies license?
A store keeps records on two sides: the storefront, where shoppers buy and write in, and the back office, where your team ships parcels and settles the money.
Storefront
Orders
Each order ties the items a shopper bought to the shipment and the payment. Guest checkouts keep the whole order with no customer account attached.
Product listings
Titles, descriptions, photos and variants, with the edits your team made as the catalog grew.
Support tickets and chats
Shoppers asking about sizes or a late parcel, and the reply that settled each one.
Back office
Returns and refunds
The reason a shopper gave for sending an item back, and the refund your team decided on.
Payments and disputes
Card charges and the chargebacks shoppers raised with their bank, along with the evidence your team sent in reply.
Supplier emails and purchase orders
What you ordered from each supplier, and the emails about prices and delivery dates.
What happens to a shopper's name and card details?
Order notes and support messages are full of personal information. Each detail is replaced by a tag while the copy is prepared, and one shopper carries one tag across every order and ticket.
In your system
Priya Nair (priya.nair@example.com) says the lamp in order 20317 arrived cracked at 72 Birch Lane, Unit 4. She paid with her card ending 4410 and wants a new one shipped. Priya sent two photos of the box.

Customer 1 (Email 1) says the lamp in order 20317 arrived cracked at Address 1. She paid with her Card 1 and wants a new one shipped. Customer 1 sent two photos of the box.
PCI DSS
Card numbers stay out of scope. PCI DSS, the card industry's security standard, covers any business that handles cardholder data, and the last digits come out of every note as well.
Platform terms
Shopify's API terms (last updated October 7, 2026) say apps may not use merchant data to train AI without consent from Shopify or the merchant. Read your own store platform's terms before you license a single order.
CCPA
California's privacy law gives residents the right to have their personal information deleted, and to stop a business selling or sharing it. It covers any business that crosses one of its thresholds.
How one pair of boots came back.
A model that answers shoppers needs to see what a store does once an order goes wrong. Read in sequence, the order, the ticket, the return reason and the refund show each decision your team made and how long it took.
One order sent back for a bigger size
ExampleDay 1, 9:14
OrderStore software
A shopper buys a pair of hiking boots in size 9.
Day 2, 16:20
ShipmentShipping software
The warehouse packs the boots, and the carrier scans the parcel out.
Day 7, 8:02
Support ticketHelp desk software
The shopper writes that the boots pinch and asks for a size 10.
Day 7, 10:45
ReturnStore software
Support opens a return with the reason "too small" and emails a prepaid label.
Day 11, 14:30
Return checkWarehouse software
The boots arrive unworn, so the warehouse puts them back on the shelf.
Day 11, 15:05
RefundPayment softwareOutcome
The money goes back to the shopper's card, and the size 10 ships on a new order.
What moves the offer for a store's records?
One system
An order, its shipment, its return reason and the refund decision all sit in the same place.
Linked tickets
Support threads that name the order they're about let a model follow the problem to its fix.
Catalog history
Listings and supplier emails show how your team described and priced each product over time.
Years of orders
A store with several years of orders and tickets in one set of systems has more for a model to learn from.
What store owners ask about platforms and privacy
Licensing is the usual route. An AI company gets a defined use of a de-identified copy, and the store keeps every original order and ticket. Check your platform's terms before anything goes in: Shopify's API terms, for one, limit how apps may use merchant data to train AI.
Start with the privacy notice shoppers saw at checkout. Under California's CCPA, licensing records that still hold personal information for a fee counts as a sale, and residents can opt out of sales. Records de-identified to the statute's standard fall outside that definition. Check with your lawyer which privacy laws reach your customers.
Shopify's terms of service, last updated August 1, 2026, say Shopify takes no ownership of the materials a merchant provides, and the merchant grants Shopify a broad license to use them. Ownership and the right to license a list are separate questions, and AI companies ask about both. Other platforms answer this in their own terms.
Product listings and supplier emails hold little personal information. Support chats and return notes hold a lot, so every personal detail and card digit comes out of them first. Scope is your call, and any record you name stays out.
The fit check looks at your head count and your years of records. A single warehouse can still fit when its orders and support tickets go back several years in the same systems. If your team is too small for now, you'll hear that on the first call.
Steps a store owner takes after asking about licensing.
The fit check
Four answers about the business, then your name and work email so we can set up a call.
First call
You tell us which platform the store runs on and how far back its orders go. Before the call ends, you'll know if your store is worth a closer look.
A closer look
If you want to go on, you describe your systems in more detail and choose what's in scope.
Sourcing the right deals
We seek out AI companies that license order and support records, and you only hear offers from the ones we've vetted.
Terms and payment
Every offer gets read through with you, and each use it allows is spelled out. Payment arrives on the days your signed license names.
Bring in license payments from orders your store already shipped.
Answer four questions about the store and learn where its records stand.
